After a series of brutal ritual crimes, Holmes and Watson arrive in time to save the last victim and discover the murderer: the unrepentant Lord Blackwood. When the moment of his execution approaches the gallows, Blackwood, who has terrorized both the prisoners and the jailers with his apparent connection with dark and powerful forces, warns Holmes that death does not matter to him and that, in fact, the execution coincides with his plans.

In a new version of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's most famous character, Robert Downey Jr. plays the legendary detective Sherlock Holmes. Demonstrating his ability to fight, as accentuated as his famous intelligence, Holmes uses his peculiar methods to get to the bottom of a case, entering where no one else would think to go to find out what others cannot see.

Jude Law plays Watson, Holmes's longtime colleague, who collaborates with him in what may be their last case together, before the doctor starts a new life as a married man. Rachel McAdams is Irene Adler, an American woman, who is as seductive as dangerous, and whose tempestuous relationship with the detective has become the only puzzle he does not know how to solve. Mark Strong plays Lord Blackwood, whose intelligence, combined with ruthless ambition, make him a fearsome adversary. Eddie Marsan plays Inspector Lestrade of Scotland Yard, who is impressed and frustrated by the great Sherlock Holmes.
